Creatures of a Day: And Other Tales of Psychotherapy, by Irvin D. Yalom

"The publication of Creatures of a Day is reason to celebrate." --Steven PinkerIn this stunning collection of stories, renowned psychiatrist Irvin D. Yalom describes his patients' struggles--as well as his own--to come to terms with the two great challenges of existence: how to have a meaningful life yet reckon with its inevitable end. We meet a nurse who must stifle the pain of losing her son in order to comfort her patients' pains, a newly minted psychologist whose studies damage her treasured memories of a lost friend, and a man whose rejection of psychological inquiry forces even Yalom himself into a crisis of confidence.Creatures of a Day is a radically honest statement about the difficulties of human life, but also a celebration of some of the finest fruits--love, family, friendship--it can offer. Marcus Aurelius has written that "we are all creatures of a day." With Yalom as our guide, we will find the means to make our own day not only bearable, but also meaningful and joyful.

I have been remiss in writing reviews of Yalom’s books. I became a therapist in 1973 and soon after I read THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF GROUP PSYCHOTHERAPY, 1975 and not getting enough….then read EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPY, 1980. Last fall at a therapy training, Yalom’s fiction was recommended to me and lickety-split I read THE SPINOZA PROBLEM, WHEN NIETZSCHE WEPT, and THE SCHOPENHAUER CURE, each book better than the one before, but all of them splendid! I started with Spinoza because I’d always respected him for being true to himself and love historical fiction. Reading a Midrash (a story that fills in the gaps) of Spinoza’s life helped me realize that I too have a “Spinoza Problem” because I think I’ve become a therapist bereft of a “methodological” community having developed my own brand of psychotheray. WHEN NIETZSCHE WEPT gave the juicy details of Breuer’s (Freud’s mentor) life and glimpses of a young Freud, not to mention an introduction to Nietzsche and his influence on psychology. It puzzles me that many therapists, thinking Freud is passé, have no interest in studying their roots and discovering that psychoanalysis is in our DNA. And finally—THE SCHOPENHAUER CURE. I did not have a clue who Schopenhauer was and I thank Yalom for his “philosophy for dummies” books. But, will someone please tell me if Yalom is familiar with the enneagram because Philip Slate is the prefect ennea-type 5: self-sufficient, avoids intrusions, observes rather than experiences, and seeks wisdom and skills. It helped me understand a significant other in my life—also a self-sufficient type. This last book, in its modern setting with flash-backs to the 1800s made me laugh, cry out loud, and is a candidate for the best book I ever read.

Ordered. Delivered. Read it. What can I say, it's another gem. Yalom quit surprising me a few books back; a yalom book for me = an excellently researched, superbly written book.A few notes:For those who have read Love's Executioner and Momma's Boy - Creature's of a day reads more like Love's Executioner. The stories, like I said, are along the lines of Love's Executioner - in general , though, a bit shorter. As with Love's Executioner, Creatures of a day is absolutely fundamental for any therapist/patient who finds themselves thinking about the dr/patient relationship. It is especially relevant to those 'radical' therapists who, like Yalom, lean in, and who aren't afraid of a bit of personal exposure. If you are put off by a book (and author) routinely recommended to professionals, don't be. This book is as jargon-free and colloquial as they come.Good luck!

Irvin Yalom. His novels have taught so many of us psychotherapists how to really listen and interact with our clients without shoving it in our faces like textbooks often do.Schopenhauer Cure is a good way to learn group psycho-therapeutic practice. Reads like a novel (and it is) and shows that the therapist does his/her clients more good by being an integral part of the group rather than as a stone faced know-it-all. Yalom is definitely NOT a Freudian. His methodology is largely Existential/eclectic counseling. The fictional therapist in the book uses his own mortality along with a gentle but firm hand to help his beloved group help themselves. There is a newer member of the group who just doesn't see what is going on in the sessions and the challenge for the group and the therapist is to get the newcomer, Philip, to "get it" and heal himselfThis book succeeds where textbooks often fail to get graduate students to truly understand the humanity in the work that we do with and for our clients.

Though I knew of Irvin Yalom's books, I somehow missed reading any of them before, during or after my licensure as a mental health professional. "Creatures of a Day" is my first Yalom book, but with certainty, I can say that it won't be my last. For if his previous books are half as good as this one... they'll all be worth reading.Creatures of a Day contains ten "portraits" of clients and Yalom's work with them. Portraits is the right word since the descriptions are so vivid and compelling that one might actually feel they're in the room watching Yalom and the clients do the dance of therapy. The topics of death and meaning in life connect the stories as one might expect from a humanist/existentialist therapist. More than one of the stories were sadly sweet and brought tears to my eyes as I read... yet I could not put down the book and read it within just a few sessions. As a therapist, who also eschews diagnosis and manualized treatments, seeing a master therapist at work was invaluable. And surprisingly, Yalom doesn't gloss over the "mistakes" he makes or focus only on his expertise. This book more than anything shows the power of moments that matter, the healing connection that can happen when one person fully meets another where they're at.All therapists should read this book, but it shouldn't be limited to professionals. Everyone will relate to these stories and the people they depict so humanly well... Don't miss out on Yalom's work, especially "Creatures of a Day."

As a therapist myself for 34 years and a fan of yaloms work I anticipated and read a sublime treasure.i had the pleasure of attending Gregory batesons last le true before he died, and submitted a question on a card. What is a compassionate psychotherapy? I asked. He answered. "Sometimes you meet someone and they make you feel better. You don't know how or why,,,they just do. " and if they are gifted as dr yalom, healing takes place, and it just does. Barbara Fritz LCSW
